I was in the same position as you a couple of months ago and I bought this ebook about making home made dog food to help me out. If you really want to look after the health of your dog you need to give it a proper well balanced diet, just the same as humans. The things that a dog needs in it's diet are different to that of a human though so you can't just give him the same stuff that you eat. This blog http://homemadedogfoodtips.blogspot.com/ has a review of the book that I bought and I can highly recommend it.
