Hi! My mom has an obese dog! I'm looking for some ';diet dog food'; recipes. My vet didn't give me many...Thanx!

Our border collie was bordering on obese for a while. To help her lose weight, we just kept her on her normal dog food, but limited the times when she could eat it. The reason she was so fat was because she would just eat the food all day long. Now we only let her eat 1/2 a cup of dog food twice a day and give her a little bit of wet food at lunch time (about 7-8 chunks). Cutting down on table scraps has made a difference, too. We also started taking her to agility classes, which she loves, and she has really slimmed down a lot, not to mention she is much more obedient than she used to be.

If you are going to make your dog food, though, make sure only to use whole wheat or rice flour. White flour expands in a dog's stomach and can make them very sick.Hi! My mom has an obese dog! I'm looking for some ';diet dog food'; recipes. My vet didn't give me many...Thanx!

It's called';FEED LESS!!!!'; LOTZ less dog food. NO TREATS!!!

It will take time. Took a long time to get that way, right?
That sounds like a lot of work, when you can buy dog food for obese dogs. Also it might help to only feed small portions of dog food twice a day. Many people let dogs eat whatever they want, they put dry dog food on the floor and whenever the dog is hungry they can eat. Then they supplement it with wet dog food in a can and table scraps. Limit portions and exercise the dog more is a better solution. If the dog is younger it may not get all the vitamins and nutrients needed for a younger dog from diet dog food. If the dog is obese because of older age, then a senior dog food is better then diet because of different caloric and intake needs. You need to find out the reason the dog is fat first and work from there.
Try going to: the petcenter.com, and look at all their suggestions...it seems very informative...
Try feeding something like Pro Plan healthy weight management. Also, only feed your dog once or twice a day, if you are free feeding, stop. Figure out how much food your dog needs per day, and give that amount, either once a day, or divide that total amount in half to be given twice daily. Also, plenty of exercise is a must.
If you are talking about purchaed diet food.. there are several brands that sell reduced fat feed for dogs/.... cats. That is the ONLY suggestion AND.. of course.. do not give the dog food from your table and try to keep the dog off of canned dog food.....and..of course.. You should walk the dog 2 times a day.. exercise is important
Go to a pet store and find Science Diet or food that is dietary for dogs. Im sure u will find a diet food for your moms dog soon and i hope he/she loses the weight...but not alot.

dont put it on a diet, let it run, get in shape thats the best way. best is put 2 poles apart then attach a string on the top, then put the dog leesh between the string so that dog can move freely but still in a leesh
there are diet foods out there for obese dogs, i just found out that you should give an adult dog special food because they cannot process protein and it hurts their kidneys
Sorry, I don't have time to look at all my dog books to find a homemade diet, but I am sure you can find one on the internet, just make sure it is balanced. I prefer just getting a healthy dog food to make sure I don't leave any nutrients out.

My grandma has a plump chihuahua and an amazing difference was made by eliminating treats for a month. It was difficult for her to portion treats and scraps for such a tiny dog so she was probably giving twice the amount of food she needed.

She now measures out the recommended daily amount in the morning, and uses her regular food as treats throughout the day. She enlisted me to walk her dog a few times a week because she can't get around too well herself. This helped with my exersize habbits too! She feeds her dog Natures Variety, which actually has the option of choosing raw meat (frozen, freeze dried, and kibble) and the high protien/low carb seems to work really well for her dog, but you can choose any diet that is for weight loss or use really good food in very low amounts.
