I have a black lab/rottwieler mix. She's about ten pounds over weight. She eats constantly and hogs the dog food from our other three dogs. Does anyone know of any type of dog food I could buy, or make to help her loose some weight?
Thanks.Diet dog food recipe?
It seems like all your dog needs is portion control. Feed all your dogs at the same time. Give them 15-20 minutes to eat, take away any uneaten food. Watch all the dogs so they don't eat each others food. You may need to separate the dogs to prevent mooching. Do not give the dog any other foods. No treats, no table scraps.
You should probably increase the amount of excercise your dogs get.
Low calorie foods are really more for severally over weight dogs who need more help then just portion control and excercise.Diet dog food recipe?
I suggest you try feeding her real food instead of commercial kibble, which has been baked beyond all resemblance to food.
I feed my dog RPM: Raw Prey Model.
The ideal diet should consist of approximately 80% raw meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% raw liver, 5% other organs, raw, and the occasional egg, shell and all, raw.
NO veggies, NO fruit. Dogs cannot digest vegetables or fruits; they lack the enzyme necessary to break down cellulose.
NO dairy; dogs are lactose intolerant.
NO supplements other than a spoonful of deepsea fish body oil for the Omega-3 that corn-finished meat does not contain.
In addition, we embrace the concept of ';big, complicated food.'; If you buy a 25-pound turkey, you can get a lot of once-a-day meals out of it: each thigh is a meal, a drumstick with some breast meat is a meal. The entire wing, with some added meat, is a meal. the back breaks naturally in two for two meals with some added meat. The main ribcage and backbone is one meal, and it is especially complicated. My dog is a 50-pound chow mix; she adores turkey carcasses: they routinely take her 4-5 hours to eat. There won't be a spot of grease left. The next day she won't eat anything. The day after that I'll just give her a meal of treats: a couple of ounces each of liver, kidney and green tripe, with a raw pig ear or a chicken foot.
Try it with all your dogs. With a little effort on your part, you can keep the price down; the little more than kibble you pay for food is made up for by the lower vet bills: this diet keeps the dogs' teeth cleaner and lowers the incidence of allergies. It also makes cleaning up your yard much easier: since this is their natural diet, they digest practically every gram of it and here isn't much left for you to pick up.
